HISTORIC CONCEPTIONS... AND MISCONCEPTIONS
by Charles Frischman, Delaware Township Historian

TWO FRONT DOORS – My house has two front doors, my neighbor’s house has two

front doors, as do many other houses in our area and also across the river, in Bucks

County.  Literally dozens of people have asked me why houses have two front doors, and

this is why:  most houses with two identical front doors, often side-by-side, as part of their

original design date from just after 1800 to about 1850 or so.  This was a time of social

change and the beginning of our nation’s evolution into an urban society.  Villages such as

Rosemont and Sergeantsville were growing rapidly, and village houses are designed

differently from farm houses, which often started small and expanded as the farmer

prospered.  There was great interest in doing things “properly” and presenting a “decent

appearance” to one’s neighbors.   Kitchens were not only for cooking, but were also the

family rooms of the day, and as such were quite likely to be somewhat messy, or should

we say “lived-in.”  Parlors, on the other hand, contained the best furniture, perhaps the

only carpet, and were reserved for special occasions:  weddings, funerals, and visiting

company, especially the minister when he came for Sunday dinner.  So a visitor who was

invited directly into the parlor was being accorded a special honor, and the bustle of the

household preparations was kept out of sight in the kitchen.

I am certain that many of our older residents will remember that when they were children,
the parlor was for Sundays only!

FIRES OF TRADITION: Mantels have been made out of every material imaginable over the history of man's love affair with the fireplace. Here we offer our collection of cast iron, marble, slate and wood mantels. Much of our product can be used when restoring an existing fireplace, or when building a new coal or wood burning fireplace. See also our hearths, surrounds, suites (providing a package approach) and more. (519) 770-0063

SUPERIOR CLAY: Home of Rumford Fireplaces.  Rumford fireplaces are more popular now than at any time since 1850. The traditionally tall Rumfords look appropriate in today's popular, classically designed homes with tall ceilings. The legendary heating efficiency of the Rumford is attractive to those who are building energy efficient homes and are concerned about air quality. The rest of the Decorative Tile Lines shown are done in a variety of hand-painted/hand-decorated techniques ranging from underglaze, on-glaze majolica, tube-lined, "cuerda seca" and "cuenca". 530-926-2629

EXPOSED STONEWORK VERSUS STUCCO - Stone walls are of three types:
rubble, or stones of odd sizes laid up at random; ashlar, or somewhat larger stones roughly
squared up; and cut, where each stone is carefully chosen and shaped to fit, often in
uniform courses.  Cut masonry was used only in the most expensive, monumental buildings
and was designed to be exposed; ashlar was less expensive but still beyond the means of
most homeowners except perhaps for window or door trim; most houses were built of
rubble from farmers' own fields or from nearby rock outcroppings.  The stones were laid
up with a simple mortar made of mud, ground limestone and cow or deer hair fir binder.
This mixture was not waterproof, and to attempt to point between these small, irregular
stones with a harder mortar was a tremendous task - I have done it!  The best solution
was to cover the entire wall with stucco, which solved the pointing problem and provided
the great additional benefit of weatherproofing.  This also unified the appearance of a
house that was built in sections, with different stones in each section.  And of course,
interior walls were never left exposed except in the most humble of dwellings, regardless
of how much we swoon over these today!

WAVY GLASS - Early windows (and mirrors too) had small panes, because it was
almost impossible to make large areas of uniformly flat glass.  Before plate glass became
generally available in the mid-nineteenth century, window glass was made in two ways:
either a large cylinder was blown and then sliced open and laid flat, or a large disc was
spun, somewhat like pizza dough, and panes were cut from it, leaving the central
"bullseye", which was often used for transom lights.  Either process resulted in glass
which showed ripples, striations, stretch marks and bubbles, which today are purposely
being reproduced at great expense for those who want the "antique" look!
- Charles Frischman

For the past 75 years, S.A. Bendheim Co. and Glashütte Lamberts of Germany
have worked together to bring the finest mouthblown sheet glass to North America. In the early 1980's we identified the need for a genuine hand made glass for use in the restoration of public buildings, homes and furniture.   Working closely with Lamberts and their traditional methods of blowing cylinder glass, we recreated the look and feel of original glasses made during the 18th to early 20th centuries. Our collaboration resulted in two glasses worthy of the designation Restoration Glass®; a registered trademark of S.A. Bendheim Co., Inc.  800-221-7379
